Approximately 14,000 soldiers ran through Fort Bragg Thursday morning to mark the homecoming of the 18th Airborne Corps from Iraq. The last soldiers in that unit returned in December.

Thursday's 4-mile run signified that a nearly 9-year run in Iraq is over.

The site of watching the XVIII Airborne Corps run down Longstreet Road was amazing.

This run is the first in quite a while where the entire 82d Airborne will be able to participate in as a full Division. 1st and 4th Brigades are deploying while other Divisions (3 ID, 101st are currently deployed).

Helmick presented a laundry list of achievements:

Last Corps to deploy to Iraq

    Last unit at Camp Victory

Last unit to coordinate and execute a road march

Last unit to oversee a detainee transfer

"Fighting is hard, but drawing down and fighting at the same time is harder," Helmick said.

A drawdown of the scale of Iraq had never been done before, he added, noting that U.S. troops have never left Germany, Korea, Italy or Japan, avoiding the problems that the drawdown in Iraq created.
