Cats in the Cradle - Harry Chapin

"Cat's in the Cradle" is a 1974 folk rock song by Harry Chapin from the album Verities & Balderdash. The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. As Chapin's only #1 hit song, it became the best known of his work and a staple for folk rock music.

Lyrics:
My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", I said "Not today
I got a lot to do", he said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time
You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin' home son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

With my current job I'm gone A LOT. Because of it I've missed so much of my childrens lives. Listening to this hurts but at the same time I cannot change the station when it comes on.

Thank God for the internet. Last time I was gone over Christmas I was able to watch the kids open presents via web cam.

you are right, not the same as being there in person but I was still there in a way.

Hope your son comes back soon.

I don't think I would have been able to keep a straight face. But he's keeping up with things. The web cam does make things so much easier.

I imagine he'll be glad to retire. I know playing Army for 20 years get old, I think the same could be said for the Navy.

With him, I learned to keep a 'straight' face...then I cracked up.....ROFLOL when he said that...Mom and Dad's payback time.

Yeah, but we need the 'rock solid' ...the ones that Know...to many new ones and it'd probably get messy. :) I'm proud that some stay and hold things together. I know how tough it is.

hmmm, I don't know, he is going to school Again, seems like when he starts thinking about it, they send him off to school. This time for his Master's and some 'extra' stuff. So, he'll be stateside for 2 1/2 years. Which means I get to see him and little family on something other than webcam, email or photos. I haven't seen them in Real time for 8 years. He reupped through 2014, so that puts him over. :)
