Carlisle is one of the fastest packers in the 647th Quartermaster Company's rigger pack shed, located on the aptly named Canopy Lane.

The 21-year-old from Washington state can finish his daily allotment of 25 parachutes before lunch. But the speed with which Carlisle can pack a parachute is tempered by an eye on detail.

He knows that one day, probably within a month, the parachute he packs will be strapped to another soldier's back. At least once a year, Carlisle himself may be the one hanging under the canopy.

On Monday, Daniels will perform at Fort Bragg as part of the military base's annual Fourth of July celebration. He'll be the musical co-headliner with country foursome Little Big Town.

The event starts at 3 p.m. and concludes at 10 p.m. after a fireworks display. Daniels is slated to perform at 5 p.m.

For the next two weeks, Barbara Morris' yard will be covered by hundreds of small, white crosses.

The memorial garden, a tradition at Morris' home at the corner of Bahama Loop and Paradise Court, is sacred ground to many.

But next year, the crosses, which number more than 360, will have a new home at a nearby church.

Fort Bragg, N.C. — The commander of Fort Bragg's 82nd Airborne calls the death of Osama bin Laden a "significant event,” but said he it's not yet clear how it will impact the mission in Afghanistan.

“It sends a powerful message. I think it’s too early to say it’s completely changed,” Maj. Gen. Jim Huggins said Wednesday at Fort Bragg. “If there’s anything we’ve been taught after almost 10 years it’s that the enemy is quite resilient. We need to keep our soldiers focused because that’s the wrong message we could send them is to say, ‘OK, it’s over. We’re good.’”

He is one of 12 infants who have inexplicably died in Fort Bragg's housing units since 2007. Nearly 20 people turned out Friday night - the two-year anniversary of Jay'Vair's death - to remember them at the Groesbeck Street home where three babies died.

Army Secretary John McHugh said Thursday that he has asked a special team of investigators to examine Fort Bragg housing in the wake of the unexplained deaths of a dozen young children in the last four years.

Separately, Army investigators said that tests conducted in military housing at Fort Bragg found no elevated pesticide levels that would pose a health hazard.

The Army Criminal Investigative Command has been investigating the deaths of 12 children under age 2 in Fort Bragg housing since the beginning of 2007.

Eleven children, ages 8 months to 2 years, have died in military housing on Fort Bragg since 2007, including one house where two infants died within three months.

A Navy intelligence specialist who was stationed at Fort Bragg has been charged under military law with attempted espionage, according to the U.S. Navy.

Navy Intelligence Specialist 2nd Class Bryan Minkyu Martin, 22, is charged with four counts of attempted espionage and 11 counts of mishandling classified information, according to the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic command. A court-martial date for Martin has not yet been set.

Brandon Joseph Mims, 20, is wanted in connection to the death of Michael Ray Staggs, 22, who was found shot to death in his car in a parking lot on Bonanza Drive on Jan. 29 around 8 p.m.

After spending time with his paratroopers in the theater, Lt. Gen. Frank G. Helmick, commanding general, XVIII Abn. Corps and Fort Bragg, met with the riders to express his gratitude.

Standing with Macombe in a circle of riders still holding their flags, Helmick said, "Unfortunately, during the last two years, I have had to attend a lot of Soldier funerals. I have had to bury guys killed in Afghanistan and Iraq — the Patriot Riders were the one common variable at every funeral I have been to."

"The Patriot Riders have always been there to thank and console the Families for their loss. But, this is the only place I have been where the Patriot Riders show up to send the guys off," he said.

On Feb. 6, 1994, Bowman and Sgt. Jose Aguillon were practicing a move known as the diamond track. The jumpers and their smoke trails streak away from each other before they crisscross in the sky at more than 100 mph. It was a move they had successfully completed at least 50 times.

A cloud of smoke and blood signaled the impact. Bowman lost his legs. Aguillon lost his life.

A Fayetteville , NC Eagle Scout designed and raised the money for a memorial for the fallen of the 3rd Special Opeations Group who were killed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

The show will go on for the 82nd Airborne Division Band after a Friday fire on Fort Bragg destroyed their musical instruments, equipment and uniforms.

The band is scheduled to perform Sunday as part of the annual Independence Day celebration.

In less than 24 hours enough donations were received from Fort Bragg and the surrounding area, allowing the band to perform at the Fort Bragg Fourth of July celebration.
